HICHS

The Helicopter Internal Cargo Handling System (HICHS) allowed relatively quick and easy loading of palletized cargo. Cargo of various types and sizes could be pre-loaded and pre-positioned onto different types of pallets.

The following pallet types could be used: Up to three 463L pallets measuring 88 by 108 inches, up to six HCU-12/E or HCU/C pallets measuring 54 by 88 inches, or eight to ten warehouse pallets measuring 40 by 48 inches. Alternatively, various types of pallets could be mixed together, depending on mission requirements. The preferred pallet was the 463L, as it did not need to be secured in the cargo compartment utilizing separate tie down devices. It slid up into the helicopter and was secured using specially designed locking bars that were an integral part of the HICHS. The 463L pallet also provided for the fastest off loading of cargo.

By pre-loading the pallets, and having them ready for upload onto a CH-47 with HICHS installed, cargo could be rapidly loaded, transported from one location to another, and off loaded. This movement of cargo could be accomplished with the engines running. This maximized the capability of the Chinook as a cargo transport helicopter.
