There are two versions of the Kawasaki Chinook. The Japanese CH-47J appears very much like the United States Army's CH-47D. The CH-47JA looks like the MH-47E without the in-flight refueling probe. |
Since the initial delivery in 1988, the 1st Helicopter Brigade of the Japanese Air and Ground Self-Defense Forces (JAGSDF) has operated approximately 32 CH-47J/JA Chinooks. The airframes were manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Gifu, Japan, under license from Boeing. The fleet participates in disaster recoveries, transportation support, and combat support training. |
