                              NOTE
THIS IS AN AVIATION SAFETY ACTION MESSAGE ISSUED IAW AR 95-1, 
CHAPTER 6, 1 SEP 97.  THIS MESSAGE HAS NOT BEEN TRANSMITTED TO 
UNITS SUBORDINATE TO ADDRESSEES.  ADDRESSEES SHOULD IMMEDIATELY 
RETRANSMIT THIS MESSAGE TO ALL SUBORDINATE UNITS, ACTIVITIES OR 
ELEMENTS AFFECTED OR CONCERNED.  THE RETRANSMITTAL SHALL 
REFERENCE THE MESSAGE.  ACTION ADDRESSES WILL IMMEDIATELY VERIFY 
THIS TRANSMISSION TO CDR, AMCOM, ATTN:  AMSAM-SF-A (SOF 
COMPLIANCE OFFICER).
1.  PRIORITY CLASSIFICATION -
                             NOTE
IAW AR 95-1, PARA 6-6A, MACOM COMMANDERS MAY AUTHORIZE TEMPORARY 
EXCEPTION FROM ASAM MESSAGE REQUIREMENTS.  EXCEPTION MAY ONLY 
OCCUR WHEN COMBAT OPERATIONS OR MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH IN CIVIL 
DISASTERS OR OTHER EMERGENCIES ARE SO URGENT THAT THEY OVERRIDE
THE CONSEQUENCES OF CONTINUED AIRCRAFT OPERATION.
    A.  AIRCRAFT IN USE - UPON RECEIPT OF THIS MESSAGE, MAKE THE 
FOLLOWING ENTRY ON THE DA FORM 2408-13-1.  ENTER A RED HORIZONTAL 
DASH //-// STATUS SYMBOL WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: "INSPECT 
THE FORWARD YOKE SHAFT IAW CH-47-02-ASAM-02 (TB 1-1520-240-143) 
WITHIN THE NEXT 10 FLIGHT HOURS, BUT NLT 31 DEC 2001."  CLEAR THE 
RED HORIZONTAL DASH //-// ENTRY WHEN THE PROCEDURES IAW PARA 8 
AND 9 ARE COMPLETED.  THE AFFECTED AIRCRAFT SHALL BE INSPECTED AS 
SOON AS PRACTICAL BUT NO LATER THAN 31 DEC 2001.  COMMANDERS WHO 
ARE UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS MESSAGE WITHIN 
THE TIME FRAME SPECIFIED WILL UPGRADE THE AFFECTED AIRCRAFT 
STATUS SYMBOL TO A RED //X//.

4.  SUMMARY OF PROBLEM -
    A.  HISTORY - CH-47-00-ASAM-08 (TB 1-1520-240-128) WAS ISSUED 
TO REQUIRE INSPECTION FOR INSUFFICIENT PAINT COVERAGE AND/OR 
CORROSION ON THE INSIDE BORE OF THE FORWARD YOKE SHAFT (P/N 
145C3051-1).  IF EITHER CONDITION WAS FOUND, CORROSION PREVENTIVE 
COMPOUND (CPC) WAS TO BE APPLIED AND THE SHAFT WAS TO BE REPLACED 
NLT 31 DEC 2001.  IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT AN INSUFFICIENT 
NUMBER OF SHAFTS ARE AVAILABLE TO ALLOW ALL UNITS TO BE IN FULL 
COMPLIANCE WITH THE ASAM.
    B.  FOR MANPOWER/DOWNTIME AND FUNDING IMPACTS SEE PARA 12.
    C.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE IS TO -
        (1)  CONDUCT A RECORDS CHECK TO DETERMINE IF THE FORWARD 
YOKE SHAFT REQUIRES REPLACEMENT IAW CH-47-00-ASAM-08 (TB 1-1520-
240-128).
        (2)  IF REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED, APPLY A NEW COAT OF CPC 
TO THE SHAFT.
        (3)  EXTEND THE FINAL REPLACEMENT DATE FOR SHAFTS WHICH 
REQUIRE REPLACEMENT TO 31 MARCH 2002.

OF THE FORWARD YOKE SHAFT (P/N 145C3051-1) IS REQUIRED IAW CH-47-
00-ASAM-08 (TB 1-1520-240-128).
    B.  IF REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED, PROCEED TO PARA 9.
    C.  IF REPLACEMENT OF THE FORWARD SHAFT YOKE IS NOT REQUIRED, 
THE INSPECTION IS COMPLETE AND THE RED HORIZONTAL DASH WILL BE 
CLEARED.
9.  CORRECTION PROCEDURES -
    A.  USING A LONG HANDLED BRUSH OR OTHER SUITABLE METHOD, 
REMOVE BULK OF EXISTING CPC, MIL-C-16173.  REAPPLY A FRESH COAT 
OF CPC, MIL-C-16173, GRADE 2, ONTO THE ENTIRE BORE SURFACE USING 
A DIFFERENT LONG HANDLED BRUSH OR OTHER SUITABLE METHOD.
    B.  CLEAR THE RED DIAGONAL \\/\\ ENTRY ON THE DA FORM 2408-
13-1 THAT STATES: "REPLACE THE FORWARD YOKE SHAFT IAW CH-47-00-
ASAM-08 (TB 1-1520-240-128) NLT 31 DEC 01".
    C.  CLEAR THE RED HORIZONTAL DASH //-// REQUIRED IAW PARA 1A
