AR 95-3, CHAPTER 5 REVISION VIA MESSAGE HQ AVSCOM, AMSAV-
XSOF, 181900Z SEP 90, SUBJECT:  CHANGE TO AR 95-3, CHAPTER
5, SAFETY OF FLIGHT MESSAGES.  THIS MESSAGE HAS NOT BEEN
TRANSMITTED TO UNITS SUBORDINATE TO ADDRESSEES.  ADDRESSEES

TASK/INSPECTION SUSPENSE DATE.  FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE
REQUIREMENTS OF THIS MESSAGE WITHIN THE TIME FRAME WILL
CAUSE THE STATUS SYMBOL TO BE UPGRADED TO A RED //X//.

2.  TASK/INSPECTION SUSPENSE DATE -
    (A)  SIXTY (60) DAYS TO INSPECT AND ORDER THE LINK
ASSEMBLY (P/N 1142329-2, NSN 1620-00-107-4529) AND ATTACHING
HARDWARE, IF NEEDED.  CONTINUE TO CHECK THE STATUS OF THE
REQUISITION.  WHEN THE LINK ASSEMBLY IS RECEIVED, MAKE
CERTAIN THAT THE NECESSARY ATTACHING HARDWARE IS ALSO
RECEIVED.
    (B)  TWENTY FOUR (24) MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF THIS
MESSAGE TO RECEIVE AND REPLACE THE COMPONENT.
3.  REPORTING COMPLIANCE SUSPENSE DATE - NO LATER THAN 28
NOV 95 PER PARA 14A OF THIS MESSAGE.
4.  SUMMARY OF PROBLEM -
    A.  SEVERAL INSTANCES HAVE BEEN REPORTED OF FAILED AFT
LANDING GEAR DRAG LINKS.  THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT
THE CAUSE TO BE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING (SCC).  THE CRACK
ORIGINATED INSIDE THE BORE, WHERE THE LINK MATES WITH THE
LARGE PIN ATTACHED TO THE AIRCRAFT FRAME.  THE CRACK
CONTINUED TO PROPAGATE UNTIL THE LINK FAILED BY OVERLOAD .
    B.  IN SOME CASES THE LINK FAILED WITH THE AIRCRAFT
SITTING ON THE GROUND.  THE CRACK ORIGINATED INSIDE THE
ASSEMBLY AND WAS NOT EXTERNALLY VISIBLE UNTIL THE LINK HAD
COMPLETELY FAILED.
    C.  SCC CAN OCCUR IN ALUMINUM ALLOYS WITH CERTAIN
COMBINATIONS OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS: SECTION THICKNESS,
TEMPER, TENSILE STRESSES AND ENVIRONMENT.  THE NEW DRAG
LINKS (P/N 114L2323-5) ARE MANUFACTURED FROM ALUMINUM ALLOYS
THAT ARE RESISTANT TO SCC.  THE LINK ASSEMBLY (P/N 114L2329-
2) INCLUDES THE DRAG LINK (P/N 114L2323-5) AND SLEEVE
BUSHINGS (P/N 114L2357-1).
    D.  A TEAM FROM CORPUS CHRISTI ARMY DEPOT (CCAD) HAS
TRAVELED TO ALL THE CHINOOK UNITS AND INSPECTED THE TWO AFT
DRAG LINKS.  THE INSPECTION CONSISTED OF A CONDUCTIVITY
MEASUREMENT OF THE ALUMINUM LINK.  THE MEASUREMENTS WILL
SEPARATE LINKS SUSCEPTIBLE AND THOSE THAT ARE RESISTANT TO
SCC.  THE LINKS THAT COULD FAIL FROM SCC WERE PAINTED/MARKED
WITH 1 1/2 INCH HIGH NUMBER "3".  THE LINKS THAT ARE
RESISTANT TO SCC WERE IDENTIFIED WITH NUMBER "5".
    E.  FOR MANPOWER/DOWNTIME AND FUNDING IMPACTS SEE PARA 12.
    F.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE IS TO:
        (1)  INSPECT THE AFT LANDING GEAR DRAG LINK FOR
THE NUMBER MARKED BY CCAD WITHIN 60 DAYS.
        (2)   REPLACE THE "3" CONFIGURATION WITH A "5"
CONFIGURATION WITHIN 24 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF THIS MESSAGE.

    B.  IF A "5" IS FOUND, ANNOTATE IN THE LOG BOOK THAT THE
"5" CONFIGURATION IS ON THE AIRCRAFT.  NO FURTHER ACTION IS
REQUIRED AND THE ASAM IS COMPLETE.
    C.  IF A "3" OR NO PAINTED/MARKED NUMBER IS FOUND ON THE
DRAG LINK, PROCEED TO PARAGRAPH 9.

            DO NOT PAINT OVER "3" OR "5" LOCATED ON LINK.
    A.  IF A NUMBER "3" IS PAINTED/MARKED ON THE LINK OR NO
PAINTED/MARKED NUMBER IS FOUND, ORDER THE NEW LINK ASSEMBLY
(P/N 114L2329-2, NSN 1620-00-107-4529).  FROM THE DATE OF
THIS ASAM, UNITS HAVE 24 MONTHS TO CHANGE OUT "3" LINKS AND
THOSE WITHOUT MARKINGS FROM THE AIRCRAFT.

THE LINK ASSEMBLY (P/N 114L2329-2) INCLUDES THE DRAG LINK
(P/N 114L2323-5) AND SLEEVE BUSHINGS (P/N 114L2357-1).
                            NOTE
TWENTY FOUR MONTHS IS NEEDED FOR DLA TO PROCURE SUFFICIENT
QUANTITY OF THE NEW DRAG LINKS TO SUPPORT THE FIELD.  ENSURE
REQUISITIONS ARE SUBMITTED AND CONTINUE TO MONITOR STATUS.
    B.  DO NOT REMOVE THE DRAG LINK FROM THE AIRCRAFT UNTIL
A NEW DRAG LINK AND HARDWARE HAVE BEEN RECEIVED.  THERE ARE
NO MORE 114L2323-3 DRAG LINKS IN THE SUPPLY SYSTEM.  ALL
DEPOT STOCK AND FUTURE REQUISITIONS WILL HAVE DRAG LINKS
MADE FROM A MATERIAL/TEMPER THAT IS RESISTANT TO STRESS
CORROSION CRACKING (P/N 114L2323-5).  THE LINKS FROM THE
DEPOT WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED WITH "3" OR "5" BUT ARE
ACCEPTABLE TO USE.  WHEN THE DRAG LINKS ARE RECEIVED, THE
UNITS SHALL MARK THEM WITH "5" AND PROCEED TO REMOVE AND
REPLACE THE LINKS PER TM 55-1520-240-23, TASKS 3-45 THROUGH
3-48 OR TM 1-1520-252-23, TASK 3-48 THROUGH 3-51.
