SATELLITE PRN 30. CH-47-97-ASAM-06 AND C-12-97-ASAM-02.
NOTE - THIS IS AN AVIATION SAFETY ACTION MESSAGE ISSUED PER
AR 95-3, CHAPTER 5 REVISION VIA MESSAGE HQ ATCOM, AMSAV-
XSOF, 181900Z SEP 90, SUBJECT: CHANGE TO AR 95-3, CHAPTER

OFFICER).
1. PRIORITY CLASSIFICATION -
    A. AIRCRAFT IN USE - UPON RECEIPT OF THIS MESSAGE THE
CONDITION STATUS SYMBOL OF THE CITED AIRCRAFT WILL BE
CHANGED TO A RED HORIZONTAL DASH //-//. THE RED HORIZONTAL
DASH //-// MAY BE CLEARED WHEN THE REQUIREMENTS OF PARA 8
BELOW ARE COMPLETED. THE AFFECTED AIRCRAFT SHALL BE
INSPECTED AS SOON AS PRACTICAL BUT NO LATER THAN THE
TASK/INSPECTION SUSPENSE DATE.
    B. AIRCRAFT IN DEPOT MAINTENANCE - AIRCRAFT WILL NOT BE
ISSUED UNTIL COMPLIANCE WITH THIS ASAM HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
    C. AIRCRAFT UNDERGOING MAINTENANCE - SAME AS PARA 1A.
    D. AIRCRAFT IN TRANSIT - SAME AS PARA 1A.
        (1) SURFACE/AIR SHIPMENT - SAME AS PARA 1A.
        (2) FERRY STATUS - SAME AS PARA 1A.
    E. MAINTENANCE TRAINERS (CATEGORY A AND B) - N/A.
    F. COMPONENT/PARTS IN STOCK INCLUDING WAR RESERVES AT
ALL LEVELS (DEPOT AND OTHERS) -
        (1) RETAIL STOCK - N/A.
        (2) WHOLESALE STOCK - N/A.
    G. COMPONENTS/PARTS IN WORK - N/A.
2. TASK/INSPECTION SUSPENSE DATE - WITHIN 10 HOURS/14 DAYS.
3. REPORTING COMPLIANCE SUSPENSE DATE - NO LATER THAN 23
APR 97 PER PARA 14A OF THIS MESSAGE.
4. SUMMARY OF PROBLEM -
    A. A SOFTWARE PROBLEM EXISTS IN THE AN/ASN-149(V1)
GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM RECEIVER THAT MANIFESTS ITSELF AS
A CONTROL DISPLAY UNIT (CDU) LOCKUP WHENEVER THE RECEIVER IS
TRACKING SATELLITE PRN 30. THE RECEIVER CONTINUES TO
NAVIGATE, HOWEVER THE OPERATOR CANNOT CONTROL THE CDU AND
THEREFORE IS UNABLE TO CHANGE THE DATA DISPLAYED. THE
PROBLEM OCCURS ONLY WHEN SATELLITE PRN 30 IS IN VIEW. FOR
MOST OF THE WORLD, SATELLITE PRN 30 IS VISIBLE TWICE DAILY
FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS EACH TIME.
    B. FOR MANPOWER/DOWNTIME AND FUNDING IMPACTS SEE PARA
12.
    C. THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE IS TO INFORM THE USER OF
THE AN/ASN-149(V1) CDU LOCKUP WHENEVER THE RECEIVER IS
TRACKING SATELLITE PRN 30. THERE IS ALSO A PARTIAL WORK
AROUND TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM.
5. END ITEMS TO BE INSPECTED - ALL CH-47D AIRCRAFT AND RC-
12 SERIES AIRCRAFT.
6. ASSEMBLY COMPONENTS TO BE INSPECTED -
     NOMENCLATURE PART NO.
     GPS RECEIVER AN/ASN-149(V1) SERIES
     CONTROL DISPLAY UNIT C-11702/UR
7. PARTS TO BE INSPECTED - N/A
8. INSPECTION PROCEDURES - INSPECT AFFECTED AIRCRAFT TO
DETERMINE THE TYPE OF GPS RECEIVER INSTALLED.
    A. IF IT HAS THE AN/ASN-149(V1) RECEIVER WITH THE C-
11702/UR CONTROL DISPLAY UNIT INSTALLED, PLACE A COPY OF
THIS MESSAGE IN THE PILOTS READING FILE AND THE AIRCRAFT
OPERATORS MANUAL. SEE PARAGRAPH 9 FOR CORRECTION
PROCEDURES.
    B. IF IT IS NOT THE AN/ASN-149 RECEIVER(V1) RECEIVER
WITH THE C-11702/UR CONTROL DISPLAY UNIT INSTALLED, THE
INSPECTION IS COMPLETED AND NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED
EXCEPT RECORDING AND REPORTING COMPLIANCE WITH THIS ASAM IAW
PARAGRAPH 14A BELOW.
9. CORRECTION PROCEDURES - THE FOLLOWING ARE POSSIBLE
CORRECTIVE ACTIONS.
    A. THERE ARE TWO PARTIAL WORK AROUND PROCEDURES:
        (1) WHEN THE CDU LOCKS-UP (CANNOT SWITCH TO ANOTHER
PAGE)
-- SWITCH TO THE "OFF" POSITION
-- TURN TO THE DESIRED PAGE
-- SWITCH BACK TO "NAV" POSITION
THE SET SHOULD RE-ACQUIRE THE SATELLITES WITHIN ABOUT 30
SECONDS. IF PRN 30 IS NOT ONE OF THE FOUR SATELLITES BEING
TRACKED, YOU ARE THEN ABLE TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH TO OTHER
PAGES UNTIL THE RECEIVER QUERIES PRN 30 AGAIN. THE CDU WILL
IMMEDIATELY LOCK-UP ON THE NEW PAGE IF THE RECEIVER IS
TRACKING PRN 30, SO YOU MUST REPEAT THE PARAGRAPH 9A(1)
PROCEDURE TO CHANGE PAGES AGAIN.
                        NOTE:
THE RECEIVER WILL CONTINUE TO NAVIGATE WHEN LOCKED UP.
HOWEVER, YOU CAN CHANGE PAGES BY GOING THRU THE ABOVE
PROCEDURE.
        (2) FOR CH-47D. THE RECEIVER WILL OPERATE IN
"DOPPLER ONLY" MODE IF BOTH OF THE ANTENNA INPUTS (J3 AND
J4) ARE DISCONNECTED AT THE AN/ASN-149 RECEIVER PROCESSOR
UNIT (RPU) IN THE AVIONICS BAY. NOTE THAT YOU WILL NO
LONGER HAVE THE ACCURACY OF A SYSTEM INTEGRATED WITH GPS,
BUT YOU CAN UPDATE MANUALLY. THE DOPPLER ACCURACY DEGRADES
WITH DISTANCE TRAVELED.
        (3) FOR RC-12 SERIES WITH THE AN/ASN-149(V1)
INTEGRATED INTO THE AIRCRAFT SURVIVABILITY EQUIPMENT/AVIONICS
CONTROL SYSTEM. RECYCLE AN/ASN-149(V1) POWER BY PULLING
THE CIRCUIT BREAKER ON THE POWER CABINET LABELED CB25 GPS.
RESET AFTER A FEW MOMENTS. MONITOR THE MISSION ANNUNCIATOR
PANEL TO ENSURE THE GREEN "INS UPDATE" LIGHT STAYS
ILLUMINATED. CHECK THE GPS SETUP PAGE TO CONFIRM THE PAGE
HAS UNLOCKED AND ALL LINE BUTTON FUNCTIONS ARE AVAILABLE.
     B. SPACECOM MAY CHANGE SATELLITE PRN
30 TO ANOTHER
PRN. THIS HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY DONE BEFORE FOR SIMILAR REASONS.
IF THIS ACTION IS TAKEN THIS MESSAGE WILL BE RESCINDED.
    C. A SOFTWARE CHANGE TO THE AN/ASN-149(V1) RECEIVERS
WILL ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A LONG TERM FIX THAT
WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY 12-18 MONTHS TO COMPLETE.
    D. SATELLITE PRN 30 WILL BE ABOVE THE HORIZON IN THE
VIEWING AREAS LISTED DURING THE FOLLOWING APPROXIMATE (TO
THE NEAREST 5 MINUTES) LOCAL TIME PERIODS:
