85-24339 and Flight Control Problems

Flipper aircraft 85-24339 experienced severe contamination of the Flight Control hydraulic system in June of 1999 which resulted in the flight controls being completely jammed. The source of the contamination is undetermined, but appears to be the accumulation of water, fine particles of metal and o-ring (packings) material, and other stuff collected over the years. Examination of the Yaw Integrated Lower Controls Actuator (ILCA) revealed a strange brown sludge that prevented the ILCA from working properly. Fortunately, for the aircrews, this problem was noticed on the ground by an attentive Flight Engineer, one each SGT Neal Williams, during the Daily Inspection.
