          Chinooks Help Fight California Fires

          California Guard Deploys

 

 

             There were plenty of hugs and tears at Travis Air Force Base Wednesday as more citizen-soldiers answered the call to duty.

             About 90 soldiers from Stockton's Company G - "Delta Schooners", 140th Aviation Regiment shipped out for the Middle East on Wednesday, 12 March 2003.

             The California Army National Guard troops say that they are ready for their assignment, but that leaving their loved ones behind is difficult.

             "It's emotional. We don't know how long we are going to be out there or how long we are going to be away from our families," California National Guard Sgt. Chris Evans said.

             Company G flies the Chinook helicopters. Their wartime mission is to fly men and equipment to and from the front lines.

 

         

 

          California Chinook Crashes

   Investigators in Stanislaus County are trying to figure out what caused an Army National Guard helicopter to come crashing to the ground Wednesday, 29 May 2002. The aircraft burst into flames when it crashed and caused a five acre brush fire.

         
The Stockton-based Army National Guard CH47 Chinook helicopter crashed into the side of a hill on the Orvis Ranch during a military training exercise.
   The CH-47D Chinook, tail number 90-00195, went down just after 2 p.m., about 20 miles southeast of Stockton and just east of Farmington. National Guard Lt. Col. Terry Knight stated
          that the Stockton based helicopter was on a routine training mission. Three crew members were aboard and were able to get out of the wreckage on their own.
