A U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter flies low to the ground as it was observed flying in the direction where Canadian troops were deployed from the Kandahar Airbase outside of Kandahar, Afghanistan on Sunday, 30 June 2002. Canadian soldiers began the first large-scale search in the hot, dusty southern Afghan province of Zabul on Monday, exploring goat trails, caves and narrow canyons for signs of al-Qaeda. The mission, Operation Cherokee, is to sweep Zabul which is reputed to be a transit point for former Taliban and al-Qaeda members fleeing Afghanistan across the border to Pakistan. The soldiers, transported in more than 50 military vehicles and U.S. Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters, found no al-Qaeda fighters or weapons in the province about 150 kilometers (90 miles) northeast of the city of Kandahar, where about 5,000 coalition troops are based. |
