89-00138, Boeing D model kit number M3292, was a CH-47D helicopter. The U.S. Army acceptance date was 27 February 1990. As of 31 January 2014, 89-00138 had accumulated at least 4,179.4 D model hours and 8,148.4 total aircraft hours. 89-00138 was a conversion from the original C model Chinook 67-18533. On 2 February 1989, 89-00138 was inducted into the D model program, converted, and initially assigned to E Company - "Centurions", 502nd Aviation Regiment, located at Aviano Air Base, near Vicenza, Italy. At some point, 89-00138 was transferred to F Company - "Big Windy", 159th Aviation Regiment, located at Giebelstadt, in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). On 6 July 2002, 89-00138 was involved in an accident on Camp Bondsteel, Serbia. While conducting training and decelerating for a fast-rope infiltration, the aircraft struck the ground. As the tail section of the airframe contacted the ground, the aft landing gear, ramp, aft rotor system, and fuselage were damaged. In September 2002, 89-00138 was transported via strategic air (STRATAIR), in this case a United States Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, to an unknown location to facilitate major repairs. In 2013, the Aviation Missile Command (AMCOM) decided to sell CH-47D airframes on the open market to dispose of the D model fleet and utilize the funds acquired in the sale of those assets to fund future CH-47 requirements. The United States Government General Services Administration (GSA) handled the auction process. 89-00138, along with 88-00097 and 88-00109, was put up for auction in early January 2014 with an auction closing date of 20 January 2014. The minimum reserve bid price was $1,000,000. 89-00138 failed to sell. On 20 January 2014, 89-00138 was again placed on the auction block with a reserve bid price of $2,800,000 By the closing date of 31 January 2014, 89-00138 sold at auction to an unknown buyer for $2,800,001. As of 1 January 2014, this aircraft was 45.6 years old. As of 31 January 2014, the last known location of 89-00138 was at at Madison Executive Airport (KMDQ), Meridianville, Alabama.
