July 2002: The seat pointed out in this, and many other, accident reports over the years as being unauthorized for use by the Flight Engineer or Crew Chief. Crewmembers in the back have had to improvise and accomodate as necessary in order to crew the aircraft with as much comfort as they could muster. More often than not, there was little comfort in the main cabin area. As such, crewmembers would secure a chair to the floor best they could and did so for roughly 40 years. Finally they caught a break when PM Cargo came up with a crash survivable crew seat and it was installed in the front of the cabin on the left and right sides.
