U.S. Apache attack helicopters ran into a major battle south of Baghdad on Monday in the closest fighting to the Iraqi capital in five days of war, a CNN reporter with the helicopter unit said. Iraqi television earlier showed gun-waving Iraqis dancing around a downed Apache. |
On Iraqi Capital |
South of an Najaf, Iraq -- After one of the longest combat air assaults in their division's history, a company from the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division landed deep inside Iraq Sunday. |
They secured a 7-square-mile patch of desert here that will be used to launch Apache attack helicopters on targets to the north. |
The troops met no resistance when they landed in 14 helicopters -- 12 Black Hawks and two Chinooks -- after a trip of more than 250 miles from their base in Kuwait. |
The Fog of War |

A U.S. Army CH-47D [88-00099] learned an old, yet valuable lesson, reminiscent of the Vietnam War. After overflying a ground vehicle in enemy territory, the Chinook received fire from a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) and was hit in the Auxiliary Power Unit area (APU). |
The aircrew completed an emergency landing in hostile terrain at an undisclosed location in Iraq, and assessed the damge. When the sand storm cleared, 88-00099 recovered to it's base where repairs were made to the airframe. |
